Aries (Mesha)
The first sign of the zodiac. Symbolized by the Ram, associated with the fire element and ruled by Mars.
Ascendant (Lagna)
The zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact time of your birth. It represents your outer self, how others perceive you, and your physical body.
Chart (Kundli)
A map of the heavens for the exact moment and location of your birth. It contains 12 houses and shows the positions of all the planets.
Dasha
A planetary period in Vedic astrology during which a particular planet rules and influences your life themes. The Vimshottari Dasha system is the most commonly used.
Houses (Bhavas)
The 12 divisions of the astrological chart. Each house represents different areas of life, such as self, wealth, siblings, home, children, health, marriage, and career.
Nakshatra
A lunar mansion. In Vedic astrology, the zodiac is divided into 27 Nakshatras, each representing a specific constellation that the Moon passes through.
Navamsa
The 9th divisional chart (D-9) in Vedic astrology, crucial for understanding marriage, hidden potentials, and the true strength of planets.
Panchangam
A traditional Hindu calendar that calculates five elements of time: Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (constellation), Yoga, and Karana.
Prasna
Horary astrology. A branch of Vedic astrology where a chart is cast for the exact moment a question is asked to find the answer to that specific question.
Retrograde (Vakri)
When a planet appears to move backward in the sky from the perspective of Earth. In astrology, retrograde planets indicate internalized energy or past life karmas.
Zodiac (Rasi)
The belt of the heavens divided into 12 equal signs, starting from Aries to Pisces. In Vedic astrology, the sidereal zodiac is used, which aligns with the actual constellations.
